In less than two hours, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Trou aux Biches solved a case of burglary in the area of 8e Mile, Triolet on Tuesday, July 11. Gold jewelry and a sum of Rs 30,000 had been taken from the home of a Central Electricity Board (CEB) cashier. The total value was Rs 435,000. A meticulous investigation led to the identification of the two suspects, Amit Achambit, 26, and Nayeem Ibnay Anooar Ruhomallly, 32. The latter two notorious recidivists, who live on the same street as the victim, were seen on surveillance camera images prowling near the house of this CEB cashier. When questioned, the two men accused each other of being the perpetrators of the robbery. Some of the stolen goods were recovered.

The CEB cashier went to the Triolet police station at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday July 11 to report a case of burglary at her home. She explained that the theft had been committed between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the same day. The main door of her house was forced open. The thieves broke into her house and stole a chain (mangalsutre), three chains with pendants, five bottles of Coco, One Million and Orchids perfumes, eight bracelets (batanah), six rings, fifteen bottles of Red Label and Chivas Regal whisky and the sum of Rs 30,000.

Based on information obtained from surveillance camera footage, the men of the Trou aux Biches CID were able to trace the alleged perpetrators of the burglary. Suspect Amit Achambit was arrested first at around 6 p.m., while his accomplice Nayeem Ruhomally was arrested an hour later.

Taken to the CID office, the two men accused each other. Each told the investigators that they had seen the other leave the victim’s home. Pressed with questions, Amit Achambit finally confessed his involvement in the case. Part of the loot was recovered from a wasteland on the morning of Wednesday July 12.

After an initial night in police custody at the Pointe aux Canonniers and Rivière du Rempart police stations respectively, Amit Achambit and Nayeem Ruhomally were brought before the Pamplemousses court on the morning of Wednesday July 12. Nayeem Ruhomally is suspected of being the perpetrator of several thefts in this division.
