The Supreme Court Is Deliberating On Ramgoolam’s Application To Appeal To The Privy Council

Must Read

Justices Iqbal Maghooa and Patrick Kam Sing have reserved their judgment on the application made by the leader of the Labour Party to appeal to the Privy Council in the “coffres-forts” case. Navin Ramgoolam wishes to challenge the decision of the Supreme Court on Appeal that he faces a retrial in that case before the Financial Crimes Division of the Intermediate Court. The Director of Public Prosecutions has opposed the application and the case was called on Thursday 19 January 2023.

To recall, Navin Ramgoolam faced 23 charges of paying cash more than the authorized limit in this court. The DPP had initially lodged the charges against Navin Ramgoolam on 20 October 2017 at the Intermediate Court. Navin Ramgoolam had then been cleared by the Court. However, the DPP had then made a successful appeal where the Supreme Court had ordered a new trial. This time, the Labour Party leader wants to appeal against the decision of the Supreme Court before the Privy Council. Justices Maghooa and Kam Sing will have to decide whether to give their authorization or not.
