Club M will start its campaign for the CAN 2023 against Sao Tome and Principe. An opponent that had surprisingly eliminated Club M from the preliminary round of the CAN 2021. The qualification for the group phase for the CAN 2023 is therefore far from being acquired.
Twelve teams divided into two pots were concerned by this draw which was made this Friday, January 22 in Douala in Cameroon. If Mauritius was spared by not having been drawn against formidable teams such as Botswana and Lesotho, it will face a selection that had made him take the exit door during the preliminary round of the CAN 2021.
Indeed, the national team had been beaten 1-3 at home before suffering another defeat in the return match 2-1. Thus the 172nd place of Mauritius in the FIFA ranking may be insufficient to get out Sao Tome & Principe which is at the 189th place.
The six best teams of this preliminary round will win its ticket to play in the group stage.
