Young Driver, 21, Arrested With Rs 10 Million In Drugs

An intelligence operation conducted by a team of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) of the Metropolitan Police led to the arrest of Jean Rex Deux Novembre Gopal, a 21-year-old bricklayer, on Friday morning, January 21. The latter, a resident of Grand Gaube, was intercepted at the wheel of a car at the Caudan traffic circle, Port-Louis driving north. The police found in the trunk of this Nissan car, a large bag containing 6.9 kilos of cannabis. Inside this vehicle, the police discovered 2.7 grams of hashish and 0.6 grams of cannabis. The market value of the seized drugs is Rs 10 359 000.

It is on the basis of precise information that this Nissan was taken in tailing on the highway leading towards the north. And around 11 am, instructions were given to intercept the car. The young driver did not have time to react when the ADSU police car cut him off. The identity of these men was revealed to him and a search of the car was conducted.

These officers were to make an incredible discovery in the trunk of this vehicle, including a large bag that contained 6.9 kilos of cannabis. The officers also searched the car as well as the driver, and they discovered 0.6 grams of cannabis and 2.7 grams of hashish.

Drug Trafficking

The suspect was taken to the ADSU headquarters at Central Barracks for questioning. He was then taken into custody for the night. This Saturday morning, January 22, he will be brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port Louis.

ADSU investigators are eagerly awaiting the interrogation of this suspect, which could help them trace the mastermind of this shipment and understand how this drug, which is suspected to come from Reunion Island, arrived in Mauritius.
