Ramgoolam: “The Rule Of Law Is Shattered”

Dr Navin Ramgoolam visited the Samadhi of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam on Friday. He was subsequently questioned on several topical issues. He said that, where he is, the Father of the Nation must be sad. “It’s not for this independence that he fought,” he declared. Referring to the Financial Crimes Commission, he said the government is confiscating all freedoms. “They are changing all criminal procedures. Where is the rule of law? It’s being shattered,” he declared. He added that the government wants to touch the powers of the DPP. This is dangerous, he said, because the powers granted to the DPP are designed to protect the population. “That’s why it is totally independent”, he asserted, while pointing out that the FCC Bill is contrary to sections 1, 2 and 72 of the Constitution. Navin Ramgoolam also drew a parallel with what happened in the 90s. He recalled that Sir Anerood Jugnauth tried to make him lose his seat. “He was so afraid of me that he tried to make me lose my seat. But the Supreme Court called it colorable device,” he said.
