Prohibition To Use Water For Domestic Purposes For Non-Domestic Purposes

With the forthcoming dry season, the Central Water Authority has decided to apply new regulations to prevent abusing use of water during this period. Here is the new regulation in force since 17th December 2022.

  1. These regulations may be cited as the Central Water Authority (Dry Season) Regulations 2022.
  2. In these regulations –

“domestic consumer” means a person to whom the Authority has agreed to supply water for domestic purposes;

“domestic purpose” has the same meaning as in the Central Water Authority (Water Supply for Domestic Purposes) Regulations 2011;

“non-domestic purpose” has the same meaning as in the Central Water Authority (Water Supply for Non-Domestic Purposes) Regulations 2011.

  1. No person shall, without reasonable excuse, use any water for domestic purpose or water supply for non-domestic purpose through a hosepipe, sprinkler or any similar apparatus in any wasteful
  2. No person shall, without reasonable excuse, carry out sugarcane irrigation through abstraction of water
  3. Any person who contravenes these regulations shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction be liable –
    • in the case of a domestic consumer, to a fine not exceeding 50,000 rupees and to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years; in any other case, to a fine not exceeding 200,000 rupees and to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years.
  4. These regulations shall come into operation on 17 December.
