Relieving the less fortunate consumers remains Jayen Chellum’s hobbyhorse. During his meeting with Minister Rengagnaden Padayachy on Wednesday 06, the Secretary-General of the Mauritius Consumers’ Association called for the introduction of a price control mechanism and the abolition of the tax on certain food items.

Representatives of Consumer Associations met the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, this afternoon, in Port Louis, in the context of the pre-budget consultations to bring forth proposals for the protection of consumers.

ACIM Proposes And Calls For A Price Control Mechanism

In sum, Jayen Chellum proposed the setting up of a public-private sector-consumer association committee. This is to counter the effects on the global economy caused by the devastating duo, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war between Ukraine and Russia. Hence the call for this price control mechanism to alleviate those at the bottom of the social ladder. He called for the abolition of taxes on a multitude of basic products and those most consumed by the Mauritian consumer. He also recommended the introduction of a 5% Tax Band for salaries up to Rs 45,000 but the extension of the 10% Tax Band.
