Police Officer Involved In Accident Tested Positive On Breathalyzer

A 32-year-old female police officer tested positive for alcohol while driving. She had 41 micrograms of alcohol in her breath. Her car, a gray Nissan Tiida, crashed into a van on the Bois Rouge highway in Pamplemousses in the early hours of Monday morning, February 13. It caused the accident of five pilgrims who were going to Grand-Bassin. The policewoman, who lives in the village of Arsenal, was admitted to the northern hospital and placed under police surveillance. Upon her release, she will be brought before the court of Pamplemousses. Probably under a provisional accusation of driving while intoxicated.

It was around 00:45 on Monday morning, February 13, that the police station of Pamplemousses was alerted to an accident on the Bois Rouge highway involving a Nissan Tiida car and a Toyota van. The car was driven by a policewoman assigned to the police station of Montagne Longue.

A hostile crowd was massed on this road. The car hit the back of the white van. The van, which was driving in the direction of Bois Rouge, in turn hit a group of pilgrims and their kanwar who were on their way to the Grand Bassin. Five pilgrims, including four Goodlands residents, aged 18, 20, 22 and a 25 year old security guard respectively, and a 26 year old resident of Petit Raffray.

They were all taken to the northern hospital. After receiving treatment, they were released from the hospital. A breath test performed on the driver of the van was negative. A preliminary test done on the female officer at the insistence of the hostile crowd by Emergency Response Service officers was positive. She had 41 micrograms of alcohol in her breath. The driver was taken to the Pamplemousses police station under heavy escort. The police officer refused to submit to an alcohol test and to give a sample of her urine and blood. After being informed of her arrest, she was taken to the northern hospital. After receiving treatment she was admitted to the ward.

This Arsenal resident joined the police force on January 15, 2014. She has been assigned to the Long Mountain Police Station since August 25, 2021. On Sunday, February 12 she worked the first shift.
