PM: Where Is It Written In The Law That The CP Cannot Retain A Private Lawyer?

Must Read

The Prime Minister was at La Brasserie on Thursday afternoon. He was taking part in a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a 224-home construction project. He was questioned about the conflict between the DPP and the CP. “The two institutions have to work together. They are both mentioned in the Constitution. Of course there has to be collaboration and the two have to work together, while respecting each other’s prerogatives,” he said.

He also added that the police is the investigating body and the DPP the prosecuting body. He added that he hoped the collaboration would be visible. But when asked about the CP’s decision to retain the services of a private lawyer, Pravind Jugnauth answered this: “Where is it written in the law that the police do not have the right to retain the services of a private lawyer? If you can quote me that section of the law, I’ll answer you. Haven’t other Commissioners of police done this in the past? Personally, I don’t see any problem with that.”

The Prime Minister was also questioned about Akil Bissessur’s case yesterday at La Brasserie. On the lawyer’s allegations that he is receiving threats and pressure, the Head of Government said that he should go and lodge a complaint with the police. “I do not approve of people being put under pressure, if this is proven,” Pravind Jugnauth said. However, on operations of controlled delivery, the Prime Minister said that it “exists in our laws… and even the United Nations regulations recommend it.”
