Pedestrian Killed In Bonne Mère Accident

The road claimed another victim on Wednesday evening, December 1. Louis Richard Calou, 47 years old and living in NHDC, Bonne Mère was killed on the spot when he was crossing the road. He was hit by a cab coming from Fuel and driving in the direction of Flacq. The driver of the car, 25 years old, living on Route Bassin, Quatre-Bornes, said he tried to avoid the pedestrian who crossed on the right side of the road in front of his vehicle. To date, the number of deaths on our roads is ninety-nine. At the same time in 2020, that number was one hundred and nineteen.

It was around 8:27 pm on Wednesday, December 1 that this accident occurred. This driver was driving his car, a black Toyota on the road to Bonne Mère. It is near the pumping station of the CWA that he saw a man crossing in front of his vehicle. He said he swerved his car to avoid him, but the rear part hit this pedestrian who was thrown off the road. At the time, he was traveling at a speed of 55 kilometers per hour.

The Quatrebornais immediately alerted the police. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service arrived at the scene of the accident. Unfortunately, the doctor on board could only conclude that the man had died. His body was taken to the morgue of the Dr Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq before being transferred to the Victoria Hospital in Candos for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed on Thursday, December 2, by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police, who attributed the cause of death of Richard Calou to multiple injuries.

The driver was given a breathalyzer test which was negative. He was taken into custody at the Flacq Police Station. This Thursday, December 2, he was arraigned in Flacq Court on a provisional charge of manslaughter.

On the other hand, a 62 year old man living in Residence Sainte-Catherine, St-Pierre was seriously injured after being hit by a car in L’Agrément, St-Pierre. It was around 20:20 on Wednesday evening, December 1, a black Honda driven by a 50-year-old contractor and living in L’Agrément, St-Pierre hit this pedestrian. The 60 year old was taken to Dr. Jeetoo Hospital where he was admitted to the surgical ward of the intensive care unit. The driver of the car was given a breathalyzer test which was positive. He had forty micrograms of alcohol in his breath.

He was placed in a drunk tank at the Moka Detention Center. According to information available to the police, the pedestrian was drunk and was crawling across this road when he was hit by this car.
