PATS Employee Arrested For Importing Rs 1.8 Million Worth Of Drugs

Ashley Takan, 25 years old, working as a planter at the warehouse of Plaisance Air Transport Services (PATS), was brought before the court of Mahébourg this Wednesday morning, October 26. This resident of Plaine-Magnien is facing a provisional charge of drug importation. He was apprehended by a team of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU), during a ‘controlled delivery’ exercise on Wednesday October 25. This exercise concerns a package of 1.03 kilos of cannabis, which had arrived in Mauritius on October 15. A raid at his home allowed to seize heroin, cannabis and an electronic scale. A sum of Rs 42,000 suspected to be from the sale of the drugs was also seized. The market value of the seized drugs is Rs 1 837 440.

The whole affair dates back to October 15 at around 11:52 a.m. at the PATS warehouse at the airport. The police officers of the ADSU of the airport and those of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) proceeded to the seizure of a parcel consisting of a raffia bag. This one, which arrived by mail MK 852 from Johannesburg, contained cannabis mixed with seeds of this drug. The whole weighing 1.03 kilos.

Following this seizure, an operation of ‘controlled delivery’ was set up under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Deosagur Ramgoolam. Thus, a raid was conducted at the home of Ashley Takan, who is suspected of being the sponsor of this drug. This exercise resulted in the seizure of 40 grams of heroin.
