Must Read

Married for only a year and a half, a 44-year-old nurse with a Protection Order was the victim of yet another case of domestic violence early Sunday evening, October 30. This resident of the Vallée des Prêtres area was insulted and abused because she refused to give the sum of Rs 1000 to her husband to buy alcoholic drinks. After a statement made on Monday, October 31, the suspect was arrested.

It is at the police station of Abercrombie, St. Croix that this forty-year-old went around noon on Monday, October 31 to report a case of domestic violence. In her complaint, she gave a history of her marriage to her husband of 36 years. She said she had always been physically and mentally abused.

On Sunday, October 30, around 6:15 pm, her husband asked her for a sum of Rs 1,000 to buy alcoholic drinks. She said she refused and her husband told her, “… coum sa to vant to kas are dimoun, la kan mo bizin to pena…”. Her husband, she added, then grabbed her by the hair before pinching her cheeks and ears. She was pushed against a wall before she was strangled. Her husband, she says, also spat in her face before continuing to insult her.

The nurse, who was in pain, asked to be examined by a doctor. That same day, a team of officers from the Abercrombie Police Station arrested the suspect. He was taken into custody at the Red Earth Police Station. On Tuesday, November 01, he was brought to court in Port-Louis. He was later released on a bail of Rs 1000 and an IOU of Rs 10 000.
