The Coromandel site marks the beginning of the New Social Living Development (NSLD) project, which promises 12,000 housing units by 2024. Coromandel will be the largest site where the construction of 903 units was announced by the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth on Thursday 21 July.
The design includes flat blocks, on-site and off-site infrastructure works. The site covers 41 hectares and falls in 2 constituencies where 600 units will be in constituency number 20 and 303 units in constituency number 01. The Prime Minister suggested that “significant challenges had to be overcome to find suitable land for the construction of these units. These include a geotechnical study to determine whether the soil conditions are suitable for the type of development proposed, and the proper positioning of the site in terms of access to services.”
This mandate falls under the NSLD, a branch of the National Housing Development Co. Ltd, which is tasked with developing these homes in the most equitable manner in the 20 constituencies of Mauritius. As the PM said, “the government’s objective is to complete this mega project by 2024, which aims at providing affordable households to the population“.
The Coromandel site, however, requires major earthworks. This part is estimated to be completed by November this year. Tenders for the construction work will be launched in August. The site will be divided into 3 lots, the idea being to allow contractors to propose alternative construction methods in order to reduce the construction period. The site is to be delivered in 24 months. Partial delivery is expected in 18 months.
