No Examination Fees For All MITD Students

The Government has included a provision to waive examination costs for all students at the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development in Budget 2022-2023 to increase access to education for all people and foster a more inclusive and equitable society (MITD). The administration charge for full-time studies at the MITD and other reputable public tertiary institutions is also being eliminated to further assist and empower children from underprivileged households listed on the Social Register of Mauritius (SRM).

The MITD’s primary responsibilities include creating and carrying out technical and vocational education and training programs and courses, offering research and training, consulting services, and establishing of training centers. It also reviews and develops technical and vocational education and training curricula based on national standards that are registered under the National Qualifications Framework and awards Certificates and Diplomas, among other technical and vocational credentials.

The MITD provides three types of training including full-time courses; National Apprenticeship program; and part-time courses. Presently, there are around 50 training programs ranging from agro-industry; automotive beauty care and hairdressing; building construction and civil engineering; electrical and electronics engineering; handicraft; information and communications technology; jewellery, management; mechanical engineering; printing, textile and apparel; tourism and hospitality and wood trades.

Regular open days are also organised at the MITD to inform the youth of training schemes, courses, and career-related information following their training.

The Acting Director of the MITD, Mr Sayadaly Maudarbocus, highlighted the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in the fight against unemployment and the issue of skills mismatch.

For beneficiaries under the SRM, the administration fee for full-time courses at the MITD and other recognized public tertiary institutions is also being waived. The Scheme will be financed under the Poverty and Empowerment vote of Social Integration to alleviate Poverty and the Empowerment of the most vulnerable people in society.

Eligibility Criteria for SRM

The household income threshold set by the Government to indicate the minimum monthly income required by a person or family for a decent life, varies according to the number of members in a household, ranging from Rs 2,720 for one adult to Rs 10, 500 for a family of three adults and three children.
