Young people between 14 and 21 years of age who wish to do so will be offered free training to become volunteer fireman for two years in the various fire stations in the country. This project has benefited from the expertise of the Young Firefighters Unit of France. Registration is still open.
The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation has set itself the objective of training young firemen. Benefiting from the support of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service and the Youth Volunteer Mauritius, the training will start in mid-February: “In September 2022, 12 firemen and 6 members of our Ministry benefited from a training course in Mauritius with the trainers of young firemen from France. The local trainers are thus ready to train 15 candidates per fire station by mid-February. These courses will first be held at the Coromandel, Rose-Belle and Flacq fire stations. They will then reach the other barracks across the country,” explains Ananda Valaydon – senior officer of the Ministry.
Although applications are still open by calling 627 40 23, candidates will have to provide a medical certificate and undergo a fitness test: “We will only retain 15 candidates per barrack. Priority will be given to candidates who live close to the barracks where the training will be held. Only beneficiaries with a correct medical certificate will be able to take a fitness test. After the test, they will be selected or not.
The two-year training course will provide candidates with a certificate of attestation: “This certificate will allow them to become volunteer firefighters in the fire station where they were trained. Moreover, if they wish to join a fire station as a professional firefighter, this certificate will work in their favor at the time of selection,” points out Mr Valaydon.
