Motorcyclist Dies From Injuries Sustained In Traffic Accident

After ten days in the intensive care unit of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, Neeraj Mattarooa, 35, also known as Tipiss, breathed his last on the morning of Tuesday, May 23. This resident of Tranquebar, had been seriously injured by a motorcycle on Saturday, May 13, on the Ory Mountain Highway at the Colville Deverell Bridge. An autopsy performed on his body attributed his death to respiratory distress syndrome. Neeraj Mattarooa is the 50th victim of a road accident since the beginning of this year.

Neeraj Mattarooa passed away at around 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 23, at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital where he had been admitted since Saturday, May 13. His body was later transferred to the morgue of this hospital for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Officer, at around 4 p.m. the same day, attributed his death to an acquired respiratory distress syndrome.

It was following a request that the Moka Police Station had been alerted to a road accident at Colville Deverell Bridge on the evening of Saturday, May 13. A team led by Sergeant Poorunsing was dispatched to the scene. Neeraj Mattarooa was lying unconscious on the road with his grey Suzuki motorcycle beside him. He was evacuated to the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital in an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service. After receiving first aid he was placed in an intensive care unit. His prognosis was vital.

The news of the death of this thirty-year-old was like a shock wave for all those who knew him. Neeraj Mattarooa was known as a bon vivant.

His funeral took place on Wednesday May 24 at 1 pm. He was cremated at the crematorium of Tranquebar. An investigation has been opened at the police station of Moka to find out the exact circumstances of this accident.
