Metro Express: Minister Ganoo Visits Palmerstone Junction

Must Read

The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, effected a site visit, today, at Palmerstone junction, to take stock of the diversions being implemented due to the Metro Express construction works in this region.

Officers of Larsen & Toubro, the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit, the Road Development Authority, the Mauritius Police Force, the Municipal Council of Vacoas/Phoenix, as well as other stakeholders were also present on this occasion.

Minister Ganoo highlighted that the aim of the site visit was to ensure that pedestrian movements and safety in the vicinity, especially that of students of Phoenix SSS and Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College, are not affected by these construction works.

He reminded that solutions must be found and implemented at the earliest due to the resumption of classes in the days to come.

  • Furthermore, the Minister appealed to all road users to be cautions and observe all safety measures due to the complexity of works in the region. He also underscored that the traffic scheme includes the relocation of the existing bus stop near the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture (IGCIC) onto a new realigned road on a temporary basis, pending its permanent location in the final road configuration.
  • As such, pedestrians will not be allowed onto Swami Sivananda Avenue along and across the works area. They will be redirected through Indira Gandhi Road or Nalletamby Avenue to reach the junction of Palmerstone road/Swami Sivananda Avenue, and vice versa. The proposed diversion scheme caters for pedestrian movement from Phoenix SSS and Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College and the local inhabitants.
  • The IGCIC has also been informed of the construction works being undertaken and has been requested to use the access along Closel road.
