Appropriation (2021-2022) Bill Voted In National Assembly

The Appropriation (2021-2022) Bill 2021 (No. X of 2021), that is Budget 2021-2022 presented on 11th June by the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, with a provision of around Rs 145.7 billion was voted today in the National Assembly. Out of the total amount budgeted for the current year, about Rs 111.4 billion pertained to recurrent budget and Rs 34.3 billion are capital budget.

Note that the debates on the Securities (Amendment) Bill were adjourned at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29 for tomorrow, Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m. It is possible that the debates will resume after a Private Notice Question (PNQ).

It will be recalled that the 2021-2022 budget entitled “Better Together” which revolved around three core strategies namely: Recovery, Revival and Resilience, focused on boosting investment, shaping new economic architecture, and restoring confidence.

The budget has been presented with consideration on the COVID-19 era with measures aimed at protecting lives and livelihoods, maintaining the production capacity, and preserving the stability of the economy.

Budget 2021-2022 makes provision for some Rs 65 billion to be injected in priority projects over the next three years among other projects to be undertaken by the various Ministries.

They are:

  • Rs 11.7 billion for a National Flood Management Programme
  • Rs 12 billion for the Construction of 12,000 Social Housing Units
  • Rs 4 billion for projects under the Economic Recovery Programme
  • Rs 9.4 billion for the construction of Rivière des Anguilles Dam and its Treatment Plant
  • Rs 5.7 billion for Community Development Projects, and
  • Rs 22 billion for land transport projects including roads and the Metro Express.
