Mercedes Attached To South African Embassy Involved In Fatal Accident

Ismet Moussa Denmamode, 72 years old, former employee of the Ministry of Arts and Culture did not survive his injuries that occurred this Wednesday afternoon, March 29. This resident of the city Gabriel Martial was mowed down by a Mercedes car, attached to the South African Embassy, as he crossed Brabant Street, Port-Louis, not far from the Central Barracks. The car was driven by a 57-year-old driver from Camp de Masque who was the only person on board.

It was around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29 that this accident occurred. The victim was crossing Brabant Street near a pharmacy when he was hit by the car heading towards John Kennedy Street. The victim was seriously injured and an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service was called to the scene. Unfortunately, the doctor on board declared Ismet Denmamode dead.

His body was then transported to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police, who attributed his death to multiple injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to the Central Barracks police station where he was subjected to an alcohol test. After giving his statement, he was allowed to leave. This Thursday morning, March 30, he will be brought before the Port-Louis court on a provisional charge of manslaughter.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances of this accident.
