Mauritius Economic Society Celebrates Its Diamond Jubilee

Must Read

The Mauritius Economic Society (MES) has celebrated its Diamond Jubilee at the Triveni on Sunday 02 October. Mr Ramduth Jaddoo, president of MES, welcomed the guests, founding members of the society and Cassam Uteem, former president, Abdool Raouf Bundhun, former vice-president and Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, former vice-president.

In his welcoming speech, Ramduth Jaddoo recalled how 60 years ago, some young intellectuals took to talk about the big challenge of sensitizing the maximum number of people about the implication, mostly economic, of achieving independence.  He stated we should see how far we have been turning our vision into reality.

In his address, former president, Cassam Uteem, points out that this day, 02 October, the world remembers and celebrate the birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He recalls that the visit of Mahatma Ghandhi in 1901 was to lead to an increasing and salutary awareness of the importance of education and political involvement to ensure the advancement and progress of the then indo-mauritian community and families living in extreme poverty and at the lowest end of the ladder.

The three distinguished guests proceeded to give awards to founding and new members.

Mauritius Economic Society

The original intention was to promote the knowledge of economics

In 1962, when Mauritius was still a British Colony, a group of forward-looking young intellectuals had set up the Mauritius Economic Society. The original intention was to promote the knowledge of economics and as time went by, MES assumed the role of a think tank.

MES has organized lots of talks and interactions with distinguished guests. Recently, Dev Ruhee, an experienced public servant, explained how we can improve project management within the government.

From the foundation of the MES, Mr C.K.L. Yip Tong, B. Sc. (Econ), District Magistrate and Chairman of the Board of Patron of the Society, as well as other graduates and professionals, also offered their unwavering support to the activities of the MES.
