Loss Of Purchasing Power: The Population Roars Its Disagreement!

Must Read

The big Rally could take place. They were, as requested by all the leaders and parliamentarians of the opposition and extra-parliamentarians, more than 50 vehicles in the streets of the capital. They were demonstrating their discontent with the high cost of living, including abusive price increases for fuel, household gas and utilities. They also denounced the corruption and mismanagement of the MSM government, even calling for a general election! They waved the quadricolour flag as a sign of patriotism.

They left Volcy Pougnet Street, Port Louis, at around 2pm and stormed Port Louis. The procession of cars, motorbikes, vans, trucks and bicycles made their way through the streets of the capital and spoke out with horns and bullhorns saying that the successive increases since December 2021 have put them on the ground. Leading parties in the procession included ACIM’s Jayen Chellum, Linion Pep Morisien’s Rama Valayden and Bruneau Laurette, Patrick Belcourt and members of his movement En Avant Moris, on bicycles, Arvin Boolell, Suren Dayal, Eshan Juman and PTr’s Osman Mahomed. Mamad Khodabaccus represented the PMSD. Activists Ivan Bibi and Percy Yip Tong were present as well as members of the Reform Party. However, the absence of MMM members was noticed and deplored. Jayen Chellum was unfiltered: “We need our purchasing power back. If they don’t lower the prices, we will continue to protest…”.
