A workshop focusing on the challenges of contractors in the construction industry was launched by the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr. Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, this morning in Ebène.
The workshop organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) will focus on the following themes: Labour issues in the construction industry; Chambre Des Métiers for the construction sector; Supply chain and price escalation in construction and bidding and contractual issues.
In his address, Minister Hurreeram underlined that the construction sector is an engine of growth for our economy and contributes significantly to the country’s Gross domestic product.
He encouraged all representatives of the construction sector to make the most of the platform being offered through the workshop to share their knowledge, discuss the challenges and difficulties being encountered as well as put forth their recommendations.
Both the CIDB and the Ministry will take cognizance of your challenges and will accordingly drive policies, affirmed the Minister.
Mr. Hurreeram remarked that the sector was indeed impacted by the lockdown periods in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and recalled that Government has sustained all impacted industries. He assured that the country is on the path of economic recovery while emphasising that Government is investing in the construction industry as shown in the numerous infrastructural projects being carried out across the Island.
Furthermore, the Minister pledged for continued support to the construction industry through support measures such as allocation of contracts to ensure livelihood of the industry and its workers and other projects in the pipeline including the implementation of a margin of preference for local contractors and the setting up of a Body catering for all the needs of the industry.
