Joe Lesjongard: XLD’s Accusations About The Election Commission Are Very Serious

Must Read

Joe Lesjongard and Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah held a press conference on the morning of Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the Sun Trust building in Port Louis. The Minister of Tourism Joe Lesjongard made a statement against the leader of the Opposition Xavier-Luc Duval for his criticism of the electoral commission.

Returning to the Private Notice Question (PNQ) of Xavier-Luc Duval in Parliament last Tuesday, the government spokesman said he noted that the Electoral Commission issued a statement on Friday, May 20, 2022, to clear the air regarding the content of the PNQ of the opposition leader. “The opposition leader’s accusation against the Electoral Commission is extremely serious. I ask myself if he doesn’t want to apologize to the institution that is the electoral commission,” he continued.

The minister also dwelt on the energy sector and the negotiations with Terragen. “The company Terragen, through its lawyers, has requested mediation with the CEB. Obviously, the lawyers of the CEB are studying the legal aspect of this mediation,” he said.

Despite the difficult context, there has been no shortage of basic commodities, which demonstrates the efforts undertaken by the government for the well-being of the population, said Joe Lesjongard.

Joe Lesjongard also reported on the steps being taken for the resumption of the equestrian season. He announced that the resumption of activities at the Champ de Mars will be soon.

Also present at this press conference, Minister Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah called on the population to denounce cases of domestic violence. The Minister also argued that the Opposition is trying to make the population believe that the economic situation is difficult only in Mauritius

The Minister of Gender Equality also recalled the efforts made by the government to reduce the effects of the wars in Ukraine on Mauritian society. Commenting on the Protection against Domestic Violence Act, Minister Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah said that she is waiting for the green light from the office of the Commissioner of Police to finalize the amendments to be made to this Act.
