Intercontinental Slavery Museum Marks International Human Rights Day

Must Read

The International Human Rights Day and the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) were commemorated on 10 December 2022 by the Intercontinental Slavery Museum (ISM), in collaboration with the Alliance Descendants Africain-Malgache (ADAM).

In this context, a conference and a mini expo were held at the ISM in Port Louis. The event was also an opportunity for ADAM to recognise and reward 10 members of the Afro-descendant community for their life journey. The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Maire Cyril Eddy Boissezon, and other personalities were present on this occasion.

The collaboration between ISM and ADAM aims to commemorate and celebrate the day of the adoption in 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a founding document which proclaimed the imprescriptible and inalienable rights of each individual as a human being, without any distinction. As such, ISM and ADAM emphasised on the theme “Recognition” for the commemoration of the International Human Rights Day.

This year the theme for the International Human Rights Day is “Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All”, in reference to Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which stipulates that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” as the principles of equality and non-discrimination are at the heart of human rights.

Thus, this celebration is more meaningful in the current context, since the General Assembly of the United Nations has proclaimed that the theme for the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) is “Recognition, Justice and Development” for Afro-descendant communities around the world.
