Grand-Gaube: A Boat And Its Occupants Intercepted For Illegal Fishing

Elements of the National Coast Guard (NCG) of the northern division made a big catch in the lagoon of Butte à L’Herbe, Grand-Gaube on the night of Friday, November 11 to Saturday morning of November 12. This was done with the collaboration of the Marcos commandos of the NCG and those of the Maritime Intelligence Cell (MIC). Eight individuals who were returning to land after a fishing trip on board a boat with harpoon guns were arrested. This exercise allowed these NCG officers to seize 167 kilos of fish and fifty-eight lobsters. Fishing with these guns is prohibited.

Based on certain information, this operation was mounted between 22 hours on Friday November 11 and Saturday morning of November 12 by the inspector Chuckowry. During this surveillance patrol at sea, this team of police officers surprised a boat docking on Butte à L’Herbe. This wooden pleasure boat was later brought back to the NCG station in Grand Bay, along with all the exhibits.

The eight “fishermen” were found in possession in this boat 167 kilos of fish of different varieties. Fifty-eight lobsters, of which fifty-one were still alive, were released into the sea. Three harpoon guns (underwater gun), the pleasure boat and its two 15 HP Yamaha outboard motors were seized for the investigation. These eight people, some of whom are fishermen, live around Goodlands, Calodyne, Riambel, and Surinam.
