A 33-year-old French national, who was swimming in the lagoon of Pointe aux Canonniers in the afternoon of Saturday, January 29, was injured by a boat. The tourist, who has held resident status since 2018, was admitted to the intensive care unit of the North Hospital on the afternoon of Sunday, January 30 after undergoing surgery. His condition is considered serious. An investigation has been initiated to find the skipper of this speedboat.

A team of police officers from the police station of Pointe aux Canonniers, led by Sergeant Googoolye, went to the beach of this coastal village at about 6:15 pm on Saturday, January 29, after being alerted of an accident at sea. When they arrived, they found the injured man, who lives in Pointe aux Canonniers, lying on a stretcher.

He told the police that he was swimming in the sea 500 meters from the shore in front of his bungalow with a 33 year old French friend, who lives at the same address, when he was hit on the left side of his body by a speed boat. Apparently, he had a fractured left foot. The Frenchman was rescued by his friend and was brought to shore with the help of volunteers.

The French national was evacuated to the northern hospital on board an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) after first aid was provided. The health condition of this Frenchman, who tested positive for Covid-19, is described as worrying. The boat, which has been reported to the police, is being actively searched.
