Young Driver Dies On La Vigie Highway

A most spectacular accident, which resulted in a fatality, occurred on the La Vigie Highway on Saturday evening, January 29. A Honda car driven by Ashley Curumsing, a 20-year-old planter and resident of Mont Fertile, New Grove, skidded before rolling over several times. The driver and two other occupants, including a 30-year-old police officer, were thrown from the vehicle. Ashley Curumsing succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle.

It was around 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, January 29, that this accident occurred on the highway of La Vigie. The blue Honda car skidded before doing several rolls. The impact was so brutal that the three occupants were thrown out of the vehicle. The car was coming from the direction of Nouvelle France and was heading towards Curepipe. This accident occurred 200 meters just after the Midlands Bridge. All three occupants are residents of New Grove. At the time of the accident, the road was slippery.

The Honda was driven by Ashley Curumsing. As passengers, a 30 year old policeman in the front seat and a 37 year old bricklayer in the back seat. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) was immediately alerted and went to the scene.  The driver and the police officer were transported to Rose-Belle Hospital in this vehicle. The bricklayer was taken to the same hospital by volunteers.

Ashley Curumsing was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Saturday evening, January 29. Both occupants of the car were given a breathalyzer test, which was negative. An autopsy was performed on the morning of Sunday, January 30 by Dr. Ananda Sunnassee, Police Medical Officer and he attributed the cause of death of this young man to multiple injuries.

Ashley Curumsing’s funeral is scheduled for this Tuesday, February 1 at 1:00 pm. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of this accident.

In other news, a 29 year old cab driver from Bel Air Rivière Sèche crashed his vehicle into the back of a bus.  The bus was in a parking lot. It was on the evening of Sunday, January 30, at about 8:00 p.m. on the Royal Road in Deep River. The cab driver was injured and taken to the Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq for treatment. He was subsequently admitted to the ward where he was given an alcohol test, which came back positive. He had 54 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.
