FIFA World Cup 2022 In Qatar: New Stadium Built With 974 Recycled Shipping Containers

Must Read

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is the first time the event has been held in the Middle East. Qatar has built seven new stadiums for fanciful sporting events and refurbished one other, especially for the World Cup.

Among the newly built stadiums, Stadium 974, constructed in Doha, is considered rather unique. The stadium was entirely made of recycled shipping containers. The stadium’s name ‘974’ was adopted to indicate the number of shipping containers used to build it. The number also stands for the Gulf country’s international dialing code.

On its official Twitter page, the FIFA World Cup posted a 360-degree video of Stadium 974. “Built with 974 shipping containers. The stadium can be fully dismantled and re-purposed post-event. Take a look at Stadium 974”, FIFA wrote.

The stadium in Doha is said to hold a capacity of forty thousand people and is built as a port-side structure, to a certain degree assembled using recycled material including shipping containers and steel.

According to FIFA, the stadium is the first of its kind that can be completely deconstructed and reused after the event. Stadium 974 organized seven games including the final match between Brazil and South Korea, held on Monday, December 5. The official website stated that after the match ‘the containers and super-structure will be reused.’

The official Qatar 2022 page on the stadium states, “This unique venue pays tribute to Qatar’s long-standing tradition of worldwide trade and seafaring. Not only is 974 the international dialing code for Qatar, but it is also the exact number of shipping containers used in construction. Situated in the portside area and sight of Doha’s coastal cityscape, fans at Stadium 974 will feel the cool breeze as it rolls in from the Arabian Gulf.”

Stadium 974 is built with 974 recycled shipping containers and has a seating capacity of 40,000 audience. It can dismantled.

”After the tournament, the containers and super-structure will be reused. A waterfront development boasting fabulous facilities for the local community will spring to life, as well as a dynamic hub for business. This new concept in venue development ensures that while Stadium 974’s physical presence may be temporary, its legacy will be everlasting”, it further continued.

Stadium 974, located in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha, can hold a capacity of 44,089 spectators. The stadium only hosted evening matches as it is the only non-air-conditioned arena constructed for this tournament.
