Environment: Waste Burning Common Place in City Suburbs

Must Read

While the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste and Climate Change is actively implementing its solid waste disposal strategy, waste incineration is still common place in large residential areas. In the suburbs of Port-Louis, in Grande-Riviere-La Tour Koenig, residents complain. Holes in the ground can very often be spotted around. Remains of garbage, plastic, metal and wood products can be observed in the places that are repeatedly used to burn rubbish.

This practice is not only harmful to the environment but also to human health. The toxic chemicals released include nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and polycyclic organic matter. These toxic gases can cause cancer.

Waste BurningThe two usual spots are found close to pre-primary, primary and secondary schools.
