Covid, Dengue And Malaria : Surveillance Exercises Underway

Must Read

2 new victims have been reported on Tuesday 18th January. They are two patients who have been admitted to the New ENT Hospital and were 71 and 85 years old respectively. The daily figure has not been communicated on this holiday.

However, the Ministry of Health remains on alert for possible cases of Dengue and Malaria as a result of the heavy rainy season. Stagnant water is ideal for the reproduction of mosquitoes that carry these diseases. The Ministry has therefore arranged for surveillance at the port and airport. The country has recorded 2 cases of dengue fever among incoming passengers. The advice to the population is to clean their premises well and to remove stagnant water, but above all, to protect themselves and to see a doctor in case of flu symptoms which take 3 days to 2 weeks to weaken the body following the mosquito bite. The Ministry also plans to deploy units for fogging exercises in localities as soon as cases are reported. This is to avoid any situation similar to those in the sister island a few weeks ago, where a wave of dengue cases was reported, along with cases of covid. Currently, according to last week’s count, Reunion Island has recorded 27 deaths and over 31,000 cases. The incidence rate is estimated at 4,254 cases per 100,000 inhabitants as of 17 January, i.e. a positivity rate close to 30%. According to the sequencing, the Omicron variant predominates over the Delta variant.
