Covid 19: 16 Educational Establishments & 1 Police Station Infected

Cases still rising. On Monday 16 August, the Ministry of Health recorded 152 new cases and communicated the numbers in the early afternoon, namely 143 asymptomatic cases and 9 cases serious enough for admission to ENT hospital in Vacoas. A number of schools had to be closed for disinfection as well as the Rivière-du-Rempart police station.

Police Station closed

Five police officers from the Rivière-du-Rempart police station have been tested positive on Monday morning.   They were working the night shift and have been allegedly infected by a detainee arrested on Sunday 15 August for driving while intoxicated, the latter has been tested positive for the virus. The station remains closed until further notice. An order has been issued for PCR testing of all staff at the station. The public is asked to contact the Piton police station for police assistance.

Primary Schools in disinfection

Several primary and secondary schools had to close on Monday 16 August due to Covid 19 positive cases. Following a positive case at Mohabeer Foogooa Govt School Montagne Longue, the school is closed for disinfection for two days. The same applies to Esperence Trebuchet Government School, Petite Rivière Government School, PCK Aryan Vedic Hindu Aided School in Vacoas. Petit Verger Govenrnment School will resume on Friday 20 August. And at Daar Ul Maarif Primary and Secondary School in Eau Coulée, the private school will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. At the Notre-Dame de La Paix R.C.A school in Port-Louis, a staff member has tested positive for Covid-19.

Resumption on Wednesday

These schools are scheduled to resume on Wednesday 18 August, namely Bon et Perpétuel Secours (BPS) in Beau-Bassin, SSS Belle-Rose, Bel Air SSS Girls, MGI SSS, London College in Flacq, Eden Boys in Rose Hill and Quatre Bornes SSS, where the result of a positive case on the student tested last Friday 13th August was sent to school only this morning!

UOM exams postponed

At UOM, a student has been tested positive following a rapid testing exercise. The health procedure recommends that students who have been in contact in the same examination room, 1.15, to carry out a rapid test or PCR and to isolate themselves at home for a fortnight. BSc Information Systems Level 2 exams will be postponed

The percentage of the population infected is 0.47%. 760,970 people are primo vaccinated and 632,146, both.
