Commission Of Inquiry On Ameenah Gurib-Fakim: “It Is A Damning Report” – Says Pravind Jugnauth

Must Read

The Prime Minister held a press conference this afternoon. He announced that the Council of Ministers has decided to publish the report of the Commission of Inquiry into the actions of Ameenah Gurib-Fakim during her time as President. It was chaired by former chief justice Asraf Caunhye, with judges Nirmala Devat and Gaitree Manna as assessors. “This is a damning report against Ameenah Gurib-Fakim,” said Pravind Jugnauth.

The Prime Minister said the commission submitted its report on September 2, after 18 months of work. “Former Chief Justice Asraf Caunhye and his assessors have concluded that the former president violated Section 64 of the Constitution,” said Pravind Jugnauth. The Prime Minister listed some of the findings, including those in which the commission referred to sections of the constitution that Ameenah Gurib-Fakim had allegedly violated. “The commission of inquiry concluded that the former president acted in violation of section 28 (4) of the Constitution when she made payments of more than Rs 2 million for personal transactions from a Planet Earth Institution credit card,” he said.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the commission reports personal gratification. “This is very serious,” said Pravind Jugnauth. He also said that the commission established that from September 2013 to March 2017, “Mrs. Gurib-Fakim made personal expenses totaling Rs 2, 253,184 from a Platinum card that Planet Earth Institute made available to her.”
