Budget Debates: Intervention by Ministers Obeegadoo & Dookun

Must Read

The Deputy Prime Minister, Steven Obeegadoo, has asked the opposition and the country to “give the budget a chance”. According to him, they are giving “the country a chance”. For the Deputy Prime Minister, “we are in a state of war” and the country is confronted with many challenges, for instance, the vaccination campaign, economic recovery, and others. Steven Obeegadoo believes that the opposition members should stop “indulging in trumpism” which he defines as “violent and heinous discourse”.

In line with the vaccination campaign, he stated that at least 1 adult out of 3 in Mauritius already had their first dose of vaccine.

The Minister of Education said that the termination of the Betamax contract was in the interest of the country. Mrs. Leila Devi Dookun-Luchoomun added that she is commenting on this topic as a layman given that she is not a lawyer. As the first member of the government to have intervened in the Parliament this Monday for the debates on the budget, she said that the judgment of the Supreme Court has proven that the government was right in terminating the contract. She insisted that there was no political vendetta in doing so.  The Minister of Education talked of the ‘Education Corridor’ that the government wants to establish in Cote d’Or. According to Minister Dookun-Luchoomun, this will increase the quality of education offered in Mauritius.
