Breaking Tradition: Queen Elizabeth To Appoint UK’s New Prime Minister In Scotland

Must Read

Buckingham Palace has said that in a break from tradition, the Queen will not appoint the next prime minister in London. Instead, she will stay in Balmoral in Scotland to do it.

The new PM and Boris Johnson will go to Scotland on 6 September in an event that will break tradition.

All along her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II has appointed her new prime ministers at Buckingham Palace.

September 5th will see the announcement of the new leader of the Conservative party. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are frontrunners for the post.

Boris Johnson is expected to tender his resignation the following day which will see the Queen appoint his successor – the 15th Prime Minister in her reign.

The Palace has not officially given any reason for the change of plans but it is a known fact that the Queen has been suffering from mobility issues in recent times.

The Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, has been taking her traditional summer break in Scotland with family and guests. She usually resides at the estate from August to October every year.

As the head of the state, it is the Queen’s duty to appoint the British Prime Minister, as it is he who will lead Her Majesty’s government.

Every leader bar one has been appointed at Buckingham Palace since the reign of Queen Victoria, according to constitutional expert Professor Vernon Bogdanor, who spoke to the BBC.

The only exception was in 1908, when Herbert Henry Asquith travelled to Edward VII in the French city of Biarritz for his appointment.
