Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, will attend King Charles’ coronation without his wife Meghan Markel, the Duchess of Sussex, who will stay with their children in California, US, said Buckingham Palace. There were earlier rumors suggesting the couple will attend the event together.
On May 6, the prince will attend Westminster Abbey together with more than 2,000 other people.
Since the release of his shocking autobiography Spare, this would be the first time Harry would be seen with the Royal Family.
As there were rumors that his family was not supporting him, Prince Harry’s book and an earlier Netflix series had highlighted his worry about unfavorable media coverage, especially towards his wife.
Since the announcement of the coronation, Prince Harry’s attendance had remained a suspense, but it is now certain that he will be at the Abbey. King Charles will have both of his sons present for the ceremony.
Prince Archie, the son of Prince Harry and Meghan, who will stay in the US with his mother, would celebrate his fourth birthday on the same day.
The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th, the couple announced in a statement that echoed the statement from the palace.
Neither the couple’s spokesman nor Buckingham Palace said anything about the decision, but there were sharply divergent reactions on social media, with some applauding Meghan for standing up for herself and others criticizing her for “snubbing” her royal in-laws.
Prince Harry is no longer considered to be a “working royal,” thus it is unclear what role he will perform during the event. Prince Harry and Meghan were not permitted to participate in the customary appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
