At Curepipe – Pravind Jugnauth: Mauritius Has Managed The Virus And Supported The Population

Must Read

On Friday, the MSM was in Constituency No 17 (Curepipe/Midlands), more precisely at Lake Point in the City of Light. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Tourism Minister Steve Obeegadoo, Social Security Minister Fazila Daureeawoo, PPS Gilbert Bablee and Kenny Dhunnoo, among others, addressed the crowd.

The Head of Government further hinted that several activities could not be organised due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which proved fatal. Emphasising the health restriction, he focused his speech on the fact that his priority remains the protection of the population’s health. In this context, the Prime Minister pointed out that the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Moody’s report praised Mauritius’ handling of the virus and support to the population.

Many workers would have been left out in the cold and hotels would have closed. “I have no regrets that I made these sacrifices and that the sectors were able to restart their activities and face the challenges,” said the Head of Government who maintained that he has always advocated a policy of truth, when there is positive and difficult growth. “I do politics on a scientific basis and I like to feel the pulse of the people. I am satisfied with the attitude of the silent majority who like to move, appreciate, judge and differentiate between us and the disparate opposition,” he added.

The Prime Minister, “Mo azir tou le tan kouma enn premye minis responsab mo pou veye ki mo pa met sa pei la dan trou…”

The Prime Minister also recalled his decision to remove the National Residential Property Tax (NRPT), abolish the interest tax and also the municipal tax, which are benefiting 110 families. It was also under his government that subsidies for the SC and HSC examinations and tertiary education were reinstated, not to mention the reintroduction of bread distribution in some schools in the country, the increase in the old age pension, the introduction of the minimum wage, among others. “Paul Bérenger, who was a trade unionist and who worked for the country’s workers, wondered why he did not consider it useful to introduce a minimum wage for the country’s workers.”

MSM Gathering

Speaking about the increase in salaries and the numerous government projects in the four corners of the country, the introduction of the Metro Express and the major infrastructural developments in several rural and urban areas of the country, especially at La Gare Victoria, (which has been transformed into a jewel), he dwelt on the fact that all this has helped to improve the quality of life of many Mauritians.

At the same time, Pravind Jugnauth added that other big developments are expected in Quatre-Bormes, Curepipe Rose-Hill and Vacoas with some planning and extension of the networks regarding the Metro Express.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the many infrastructure projects including the construction of hospitals and 12,000 houses in several locations and financial support for Small and Medium Enterprises and self-employed.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism and Housing, Steve Obeegadoo congratulated the MSM on its 40th anniversary. He said he recognised the party’s contribution to the building of Mauritius. This was at the Sunshine Party’s convention yesterday, Friday 19 August 2022, at Lake Point in Curepipe. The MSM has contributed greatly to the development and progress of the country over the past forty years,” he said.
