Arvin Boolell : It Is Legitimate For The Labour Party To Regain The Post Of Leader Of The Opposition

Must Read

On this Friday 4th March 2022, the Labour Party held its weekly press conference.  The main topic of discussion was whether or not Arvin Boolell should take the post of the Leader of the Opposition. Commenting on this topic, Dr Boolell stated that “the Labour Party is not demanding … but we deserve respect and everyone must keep their opinions“.

On the same topic, Arvin Boolell raised a point by taking into consideration the Article 73 Section (2) (a) of the Constitution of Mauritius, which states that “where there is one party of the Opposition whose numerical strength in the assembly is greater than the strength of any other Opposition party…”, it is obvious that it is legitimate for the Labour Party, who has the largest number of MPs in Parliament, to regain the post of Leader of the Opposition.

The Labour MP has made it clear that many things have changed since the conversation he had with the current Leader of the Opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval. The meeting between Paul Bérenger and Navin Ramgoolam, according to the red MP, is the “dispute” that changed the situation.

It is important that there is respect for the Labour Party and that the programme must take precedence over the parties“. He insisted on the need for a participatory approach of the entire Opposition.

Arvin Boolell commented on the non-payment of pensions stating that “it is a failure by the authorities“.

He also seized the opportunity to congratulate the winning team of the Rodrigues elections and requested that the PM announces a date for the municipal elections at the soonest possible.

Fabrice David, Mahen Gungapersad and Osman Mahomed were also present during the press conference.
