All Cyclone Warnings Lifted And Severe Weather Conditions Issued

Due to the latest observations regarding the intense tropical cyclone Freddy, all cyclone warnings have been lifted at 04 00 hours on this morning, but a safety bulletin has been issued.

Minister Anwar Husnoo stated yesterday that a safety bulletin will be issued for the very first time in Mauritius to inform the public of the existence of any severe weather conditions associated with the cyclone and other environmental risk, depending on the nature and extent of the damage caused by the cyclone. It will also enable authorities to assess the situation post-cyclonic period to ensure the safety of all.

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, Dr Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, provided these details yesterday evening at the headquarters of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) in Port Louis.

The Vice Prime Minister indicated that during the safety bulletin, the public is strictly advised not to venture outdoors and to respect all safety measures until a termination bulletin is issued. The safety bulletin period will be of duration of two or more hours depending on the situation.

As regards educational institutions, he underlined that following the issue of the termination bulletin, heads and non-teaching staff of schools will have to take stock of any damage caused by the cyclone.

He has also stated that all schools including pre-primary, primary, and tertiary institutions as well as vocational and educational training centers will remain closed today 21 February 2023.
