After A Night On The Run, A Suspect In A Drug Case Surrenders To The Police

Must Read

After being brought before the Port-Louis court on Friday, September 17, for a drug trafficking case, Karl Denis St Martin, 29 years old, will be presented this Monday, September 20, before the Pamplemousses court on a provisional charge of “escape from legal custody”. This offense was committed in the police station of Pointe aux Canonniers in the afternoon of Friday, September 17, where he was going to be taken to be detained after his appearance in court in Port-Louis.

Karl Denis Martin, a bricklayer and resident of François, Calodyne, was arrested on Friday, September 17 by police officers of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID). This was in relation to an investigation into a drug trafficking network operating on the Mauritius/Reunion axis. This man is the sixteenth suspect to be arrested in this investigation, which dates back to May when a boat was intercepted by elements of the National Coast Guard off Coin-de-Mire with three crew members on board. A sum of 13,000 euros and 650 liters of diesel were found in their possession. They were suspected of being involved in drug trafficking.

On the same day, he was taken to the court of Port-Louis for his appearance on a provisional charge of attempted importation of dangerous drugs, or even drug trafficking. After his appearance, escorted by a police inspector and two CCID officers, the suspect was taken to the Pointe aux Canonniers police station for detention until Friday, September 24. Before the vehicle stopped, the CCID inspector was writhing with pain in his kidney. The two police officers, who were with him, had to focus their attention on him. The car doors unlocked as soon as the car came to a stop. The suspect then took the opportunity to flee with his handcuffs on.

Several police units were mobilized for a manhunt. In the meantime, on Saturday, September 18, around 10:30 am, he was taken into custody at the police station of Pointe aux Canonniers, accompanied by his lawyer. He returned to the investigators the pair of handcuffs that was in his possession.  He then participated in a reenactment of the facts on Sunday morning and indicated to the men of the Criminal Investigation Division of Grand Bay, led by Inspector Thakoor and Sergeant Doorbeejun, the different places where he was during his escape.
