Must Read

Ryley Vince Bernard, 8 years old, did not survive his injuries sustained in a fall down the stairs of one of the three-story apartments where his maternal grandmother resides at 5th Mile, Belvedere, Beau-Bassin. The boy breathed his last in the neurological ward of the intensive care unit of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis in the afternoon of Sunday, December 2.

This young boy, who lived on St. Croix, was in grade 3 at the Government School of La Tour Koenig, Pointe aux Sables. He was at the home of his maternal grandmother at 5e Mile, Belvedere, Beau-Bassin when this tragedy occurred at approximately 12:10 pm on Friday, December 31, 2021. His grandmother, aged 50, who works as a cleaning lady, explained that on that fateful day, she was cleaning her house. After noticing the absence of her grandson with other family members, they began to look for him.

Later, the 50-year-old heard her son yelling that “Ryley finn hurts”. She ran to the stairs outside her apartment and there she saw her grandson sitting on the stairs bleeding profusely from his forehead. Her neighbor, a 33-year-old plumber, accompanied by another 52-year-old neighbor, drove her grandson to Dr. Jeetoo Hospital.

The grandmother told police that she could not explain the circumstances under which her grandson fell down the stairs. Ryley Bernard succumbed to his injuries at approximately 2:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 2. His body was autopsied at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue at 5:30 p.m. the same day. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical office and attributed his death to craniocerebral injuries.

An investigation has been opened at the Beau-Bassin police station to shed light on the circumstances under which this young boy met this tragic end. The funeral of Ryley Bernard took place this Monday, January 3rd in Pointe aux Sables.
