7-Year-Old Girl’s Attacker Tracked Through Surveillance Camera Footage

Bissoonduth Ramdass, 56 years old from Bambous Virieux was arrested by elements of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Curepipe in relation to the assault perpetrated on a 7 year old girl in the afternoon of Friday April 29 in Curepipe. Investigators were able to trace the suspect, who is in his fifties and has been roaming the streets of Curepipe for some time, through surveillance camera footage. The suspect was brought before the court of Curepipe this Monday morning, May 2, before being taken to a police cell. As for the little girl, she is still admitted to the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle. The child who was sexually assaulted has injuries to her body and a fractured head. In the medical community, his condition is considered stable.

The suspect was apprehended by the men of Superintendent of Police, Mahendradeosingh Surnam, in the Forest-Side area, the locality where the girl lives, shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. Under close interrogation, Bissoonduth Ramdass, who removed his beard after the attack, confessed to the investigators that he had brutalized the girl who refused to kiss him. This resident of Bambous Virieux is known to the police for cases of assault and theft.

It was a good Samaritan who brought the girl to the station of Curepipe before she was taken to the hospital. It was around 5:15 pm on Friday, April 29, when the 42-year-old painter was returning home and found the girl. The forty year old was walking along Brown Sequard Street, Curepipe with his 24 year old co-worker when he saw the girl come out of a bush about ten meters in front of them.

The child was walking dangerously and was in danger of being hit by a car. Immediately, he approached her. Her face and dress were smeared with blood. She also had a head injury. When questioned, the girl had to say, “A man kidnapped me and assaulted me.

Immediately alerted to the case, District Headquarters in Curepipe treated the case with great importance. Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police went to the girl’s bedside to examine her. Samples were taken from her for examination at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Reduit, along with the clothing she was wearing at the time of the attack. The forensic scientist requested that the results of the tests be provided to him as soon as possible.

After being brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis on Sunday morning, May 1, Bissoonduth Ramdass was brought before the court in Curepipe on Monday morning, May 2. He is facing a provisional charge of causing harm to child. He was subsequently held in a cell at the Curepipe police station.

The investigation in this case is being conducted under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chandan Ramkeelawon.
