In the early hours of Friday morning, June 23, Gilles Thomas Germain, a 20-year-old assistant skipper, met a tragic end in an accident on the Route Royale in Bel Ombre. The car he was driving left the road at a place called Pariaka and crashed between two trees. The young driver, who lived in Le Morne, was killed instantly. Gilles Germain is the sixty-second victim to be killed on our roads since the beginning of this year.
This terrible accident took place at around 00:20 on Friday morning, June 23. Gilles Germain was driving a Honda Grace on the tree-lined Route Royale de Bel Ombre, when he lost control of his vehicle at a point called Pariaka. He then went off the road before entering between two trees, where he got stuck, with the radiator facing the Tamassa hotel.
A team of police officers from the Bel Ombre police station, led by Sergeant Sewsungkur, arrived at the scene of the accident. Gilles Germain was found unconscious in the driver’s seat. He was bleeding from his nose, ears and mouth. Both his feet were trapped after the impact of the collision. An ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence arrived on the scene within minutes. The doctor on board sadly pronounced the young assistant skipper dead.
His body was then taken to the Souillac hospital morgue, before being transferred to the Victoria hospital in Candos for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out on the morning of Friday June 23 by Dr. Sheila Jankee-Parsad, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to craniocerebral lesions.
The area where this accident occurred is not well lit and is not covered by Safe City cameras either. The Bel Ombre police have opened an investigation to shed light on the circumstances of this accident.
