Police in the North Metro Division were presented with two cases of domestic violence on Friday afternoon, November 25. In Vallée-Pitot, a security guard at the United Bus Service (UBS) Ltd reported his 23-year-old son, who regularly messes with other members of his family and himself if they refuse to give him money for his drug fix. To prevent his son from attacking his family while he was away at work, he was forced to hand over a sum of Rs 850.

In Cité Briquetterie, St Croix, a woman filed a complaint against her 28-year-old partner, a drug addict, for assaulting her with a sword for the same reason.

It was around 4pm on Friday 25 November that the 50-year-old security guard at UBS went to the Vallée Pitot police station to report his son. In his complaint, he explained that on Thursday 24 November at around 5pm, he was in his room when his son arrived and asked him for money. When he refused, he left. However, at around 8pm, he returned and under threat, demanded that his father give him the money. Faced with another refusal, the young man became threatening and told him, “give mo ale sinon si to pa donn mwa kas mo pou kraz partou”.

The fifty-year-old said he was forced to give in to his son’s demands for fear that he would cause trouble for other members of his family. He gave him Rs 850 before he went to work.

In Cité Briquetterie, Sainte-Croix, a 24-year-old mother of two filed a complaint against her partner of eight years for domestic violence. On Friday 25 November at around 4.50 pm, her partner, who is a drug addict, asked her for money. She said she refused him money, and the man then began to assault her. He grabbed a sword and hit her in the right foot. The young woman said she fled down the street, but her partner caught up with her and began to abuse her.

Police officers from the Abercrombie police station, who arrived at the scene, witnessed the violence.

After spending a night in a police cell, the 23-year-old and the 28-year-old were brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port Louis this morning, Saturday 26 November. They are facing a provisional charge of domestic violence.
