‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is Tom Cruise’s First Film To Cross The Billion Mark

Must Read

According to distributor Paramount, “Top Gun: Maverick”, the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun”, has crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The movie sees Tom Cruise reprise the legendary role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

The new figures make the film second-highest-grossing film in Paramount’s long history. The only other movie to outdo it was 1997’s “Titanic.” “Top Gun: Maverick” performed superbly on Memorial Day weekend (30th May). Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It is held to mourn U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

Brian Robbins, Paramount Pictures’ president and CEO, said in a statement that, “It’s rare to get the special kind of alchemy that creates a true event film, and we have been absolutely blown away by the global response.”

The movie has elicited tremendous response and word of mouth has gotten people even over the age of 35, to got to the theatre and watch the movie. This makes the movie only the second after “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, to mint $1 billion at the box office in the pandemic era.

“For any film to join the $1 billion club is a monumental achievement,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscor, (SCOR) told CNN. “But ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ hitting $1 billion during the pandemic is a bit different.”

“It was the perfect movie at the perfect time because it starred one of Hollywood’s last movie stars, in a movie that delivered on all fronts to all audiences around the world,” he added.

“Maverick” has made more than $520 million within the US and more than $468 million abroad. The CNN said it is the 50th film in history to make more than $1 billion at the global box office, not accounting for inflation.
