The Merchant Of Moris: Down With Prejudice

Must Read

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice, The Merchant of Moris highlights the stereotypes of Mauritian society. Written by Meera Bholah, the play will be performed at the Caudan Art Centre on August 19 and 20 at 8pm.

Time. Meera Bholah – 19 years old knew what to do during the March 2020 lockdown. A student at Queen Elizabeth College, this Curepipe resident wrote an essay before getting the idea to turn it into a play: “I was studying The Merchant of Venice in a course. I discovered in this play many similarities with the Mauritian society. So I wrote an essay that depicts the stigma and stereotypes of our society. Once I finished it, I realized that it was possible to make a play out of it.”

She then contacted the Immedia agency, which entrusted the project to director Gaston Valayden: “Rama Poonoosamy, the director of Immedia was won over by the project. He entrusted its direction to Gaston Valayden. Together we rewrote the play to make it more theatrical.”

As a reminder, tickets are currently on sale at Rs 700.
