Swimming Turns Deadly For Two Teenagers In Bassin Feraille, Chamouny

Two teenagers, Ravnish Ramah and Leedish Ittoobah, residents of the village of Chamouny, lost their lives late Tuesday afternoon, November 15, while swimming at Bassin Feraille, Chamouny. The two young people went there with five other young people. At some point, Ravnish Ramah, a student at SSS Mahatma Gandhi of New France and Leedish Ittoolah, who was a hairdresser, had disappeared from the surface of the water. An autopsy performed on Tuesday evening, November 15, attributed the death of these two young people to asphyxiation due to drowning.

These seven young people aged between 15 and 22 years, five of whom are in secondary school, the 22-year-old studying at the University of Mauritius and Leedish Ittoolah was a hairdresser. The 15 year old from EDC, Surinam, two 16 year olds who live on Chemin Grenier and Chamouny respectively, an 18 year old from EDC, Surinam and the 22 year old student from the University of Mauritius who lives at Camp Fanny, Chemin Grenier.

It is following a request to the police station of Chemin Grenier that a team of police officers, led by Inspector Radhakrishna Putchay went to Bassin Feraille, Chamouny around 5:20 pm on Tuesday, November 15.  Two of seven youths who went there for a swim did not come out of the water.  The police machinery was set in motion. The men of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service, the National Coast Guard and those of the Divisional Supporting Unit went to the spot. The two bodies were recovered by the men of the QRG. Dr. Gopee of the Emergency Medical Service was able to determine the death of the two young people.

The bodies of these two victims were transported to the morgue of the Victoria Hospital, Candos for an autopsy. This one is practiced by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Officer attributed the death to asphyxia due to drowning.

An investigation was initiated at the level of the police station of Chemin Grenier to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
