Sudan Asks UN To “Immediately Terminate” Its Political Mission

Must Read

Sudan’s acting foreign minister, Ali Sadeq, wrote to the UN Security Council on Thursday, asking that it “immediately terminate” the UN political mission in the nation (UNITAMS).

“(The) government of Sudan requested that the United Nations immediately terminate the UNITAMS mission. At the same time, we would like to assure you that the Government of Sudan is committed to engaging constructively with the Security Council and the Secretariat,” Sadeq said in a letter distributed to the UN Security Council and addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“The purpose of establishing the mission (was) to assist the transitional government of Sudan after the December 2018 revolution,” he wrote, stating that the way the mission performed in carrying out its goals “was disappointing.”

A spokeswoman for Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, responded that the letter had been received and forwarded to the Security Council when questioned about Sudan’s decision.

After weeks of growing tension over a plan to integrate forces as part of a transition from military control to civilian democracy, a battle broke out on April 15 between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

September saw the announcement of the UN special envoy to Sudan’s resignation, coming more than three months after Sudan had proclaimed him unwelcome following disputes between opposing factions that had escalated into conflict.
