Russia-Ukraine War: Cyril Ramaphosa Informs China’s Xi Jinping About Africa’s Peace Plans

Must Read

In an effort to put an end to violence, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has informed Chinese President Xi Jinping of the impending visit by African leaders to Russia and Ukraine.

According to the Chinese state TV, the two leaders spoke over the phone on last Friday.

According to a statement from South Africa’s presidency, Ramaphosa reminded Xi that he had taken note of the peace plan put forth by China and that African leaders backed efforts to end the conflict peacefully.

The statement said, “President Xi Jinping commended the initiative by the African continent and acknowledged the impact the conflict has had on human lives and on food security in Africa.”

As a result of the war’s massive population displacement, spike in food prices, and impact on global prosperity, numerous peace initiatives to stop the war have surfaced in various capitals.

In response to peace initiatives from some of its members, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a significant effort to court the Global South, a term used to describe the regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The official stance of Ukraine on any peace agreement is that all Russian forces must leave its borders.

The African peace proposal, whose specifics haven’t been made public, was announced by Ramaphosa on May 16. The leaders of Senegal, Uganda, Egypt, the Republic of the Congo, and Zambia are also in favour of the peace proposal.
