Respekte Moris: National Cleanliness Awareness Campaign

Must Read

The third stage of the national awareness campaign for cleanliness and cleaning Respekte Moris took place this Thursday, August 19. No less than four regions of the island were on the program: the East Coast, Bel-Ombre, Le Morne and Wolmar.

This joint initiative of the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Tourism, the MTPA, the AHRIM, the Tourism Authority, the Beach Authority and the European Union delegation brings together all members of the big family of Mauritian tourism, including operators in the sector, without forgetting the local authorities of each region.

As explained by the Honorable Kavydass Ramano, Minister of Environment, Waste Management and Climate Change, “One of the objectives of this national clean-up campaign is to raise public awareness of the paramount importance of protecting our beaches from litter and illegal dumping. Over the past few years, the Ministry has been carrying out protection and rehabilitation works on eroded public beaches in Mauritius.

National Cleanliness Awareness Campaign

Lindsay Morven, Director of the Tourism Authority, added that “This clean-up exercise on the east coast follows the launch of the major environmental campaign #Respektemoris, launched since July, by the great family of tourism in partnership with the authorities, the ministries concerned and the European Union. Mauritian beaches are attracting more and more holidaymakers. This tourist craze is accompanied by significant pollution, especially plastic pollution. The coastal communities must increase awareness among citizens to fight against waste. Faced with this situation, the Tourism Authority has the responsibility to promote a sustainable development of the tourism industry and to ensure the cleanliness and rehabilitation of tourist sites throughout the country.

This is why there are not only Clean-up days, but also a strong awareness axis, seen through the eyes of the tourism family. This initiative not only has a positive impact on the environment, but will also give visitors a better experience of our country.

This 3rd clean-up day was a real success, with participants managing to remove several tons of waste in all the areas involved.

The agenda for the rest of the campaign:

September 18, 2021: the designated sites of the coastal areas around the island and 4 islets (Gabriel islet, Plate islet, Bernache islet,Ile aux Bénitiers)

October 29, 2021: designated sites in the coastal areas and some tourist sites.
