Private Prosecution Against Pravind Jugnauth Struck Out

Must Read

There is no case related to election expenses against the Prime Minister. After the developments in the Supreme Court yesterday, and as ordered by the judges, the case was called before the District Court. And as expected, the DPP filed a notice of stay of proceedings. The Private Prosecution case of Suren Dayal has therefore been struck out.

As we know, on Thursday, the Director of Public Prosecutions had already informed the Supreme Court that he will present a ‘discontinuance of proceedings’ before the Port-Louis court. Mr. Satyajit Boolell, Senior Crown Counsel, spoke after his colleagues, Mr. Désiré Basset, Senior Counsel and lawyer of the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, and Mr. Antoine Domingue, Senior Counsel and lawyer of Suren Dayal, began their pleadings.

Seeking clarification of the DPP’s position on the Private Prosecution case filed by Suren Dayal in the Port Louis court, Senior Puisne Judge Nirmala Devat asked the DPP if it had taken any action in this case.

The DPP replied that he would file a discontinuance of proceedings in the next session. But that he could not do so because, in the meantime, a freeze order was issued on October 26, 2021 by the Supreme Court.
